Hi Guys
I need some advice on my front chain rings. I currently have three which i don't need as vary rarely use the outer one. I have also been thinking of getting a chain guide to stop the chain bouncing around as a couple of times its got caught up or not bitten the rings as its been to bumpy in the woods. as far as I know its a 48-38-28 set up.

What I wanted to know,
1. is can i just take the outer one off and put the crank back together.
2. will i need a new shifter or front mech as it will still go to the third ring which will be missing.
3. which if any two ring chain guides are there that dont cost the earth.

Any help would be great

Just a beginner but we all start some where

You can take the outer ring off and keep all the same equipment, get a bash ring to protect you from sharp teeth
you will need to adjust the front dreailur so it doesnt go out to far.
you may need shorter chain ring bolts or 8mm washers to space.

Great that's just what I was hoping for. Had feeling it was more complicated than that only because experinace had led me to believe if it looks simple it never is. :?
Should I shorten the chain?

Absolutely cracking. I will use this for sure. I'm sure i could do with a bike maintenance course. Bit more advanced from since I used to ride BMX. One step at a time I suppose.

Just another question.

. I have a 28-38-48 and am going to take the outer one off. If I replace the chain rings altogether is there a progression in teeth that has to be followed. ie, ten teeth like the current set up, or can it go 26-38 etc.

Take a look at Sheldon browns website and look at the gear ratio's, you can choose 2 rings that will give you steady shifts with out big leaps in difference, the fewer shifts to maintain the same ratio is desirable

It doesn't matter what you ride

Thanks. I just looked at ordering a chain guide. Blackspire stinger there are three different mounts bb iscg5 and and iscg mount. I am going to stick with a 28-38 chain ring. Which mount do I need or how do I find out
