I don't think there is a bad bike these days from the main manufacturers.. id go with the one you can swing a leg over and test ride and the one which will be best supported by your local shop.

If i was you i'd try and find a demo day, like at Rutland Cycles. Its def worth a trip to try some bikes out. The one you want isn't always the one you end up with!

Personally, i tried a Scott, a Giant, a Trek and a Specialized on a Rutland Cycles demo day earlier this year.

The order of preference going up there was:
1. Giant
2. Scott
3. Specialized
4. Trek

After trying them out, the order was:
1. Trek
2. Giant
3. Specialized
4. Scott

They were all 29ers. The Scott was £3500 !! I got the Rumblefish Elite and i love it!!

The temptation is to save a bit more and buy a more expensive bike but, get what you can afford and upgrade when its necessary / you can afford it. The Anthem X 29er 4 is a great bike.
