Go for the modern soft/goes hard on impact armour if you can... so much more comfortable and shock absorbing.

Leatt - their armour is new but they are very well known for neck braces
also check these - all good makes in the soft amour space

I like the Leatt one, I started a thread on here a while ago about lightweight 3D0 stuff, (the light flexible material that hardens on impact), and the Leatt would seem to be made out of similar material, Ive got some 661 3D0 knee pads and love 'em, so light and barely feel you are wearing them..I'm not a fan on thick body armour..Ive currently got a lightweight No Fear one > http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=24008 not quite as good but only cost £14.

Muzza go for a pressure suit style rather than the lighter style

i have been using a 661 pressure suit for the past 4 years and it has never let me down.
it is warm in the summer but then any armour is when you are pushing up, no problems on the way down though.

the pressure suit style stuff (magnetic suit, critical armour) will take the edge off of hard slams as the hard pads will skid rather than grab the floor which the soft only pads will.

I think as you are at the stage where you will find yourself progressing a lot it is worth having the sturdier protection especially with your dh aspirations, roots hurt a lot less in hard armour!

Although the theory is with the new magic materials d3f, d3o, sastec is that on impact it acts like a hard plastic and doesn't grab as much and returns to soft and flexible after.

Ribs normally get broken through compression which is not likely to be stopped by any padding without restricting movement

The chest plate & kidney straps incorprate protection. With a good back plate. Ive had two massive offs and not toutched my torso once, and that was with no armour at all. So this edittion increase's my protection 100%.
Anyway i like to go over the bars, not through them

you wont need it for ukbikeskills fella take it anyway just incase, you start with the basics to change your techniques to apply it, personal preference if you want it but I went in my shin pads a jumper and a xc helmet, on the jumps and drops you do a small 3ftish drop and a 6ft table top and some work on cornering looking and pump track, there was 9 of us we was all in xc lids too :)

you can progress on to bigger stuff IF you want but trust me when I say it leaves you physically and mentally exhausted, I was the only one to hit the small ladder ramp at the end of the pump track and we was all to tired to give it a proper go I was lucky not to stack it!

Thanks for the tip about XC lids, i think i'll take both my FF/XC lids to be safe and all my pads and stuff. An remove/apply as needed " dependent on size of brave pill "
