Im building up a whyte 905 to get ready for MSG 2013 but id like some advice on gearing,

will a 1x10 set up be enough gears for the MSG courses? (36T chainring and 11-34 cassette)
It will be good for the flatter stuff like Thetford and Tunstall, but ive never been to the other places so dont know how hilly it is.

I run 1x9 on my HT 38 up front 12-36 out back but thats on a 29er, for tunstall, thetford, and hylands you want a pretty high gearing, for codham, and langdon i would suggest a double as a minimum!

Make sure your comftable in the cockpit too, as you will feel like your in it for days on the first race LOL

a bottle rack is also a must as you wont want to use a camelbak

I might be there for days if i dont go fast enough lol. I have a granny ring to put on if needs be but im trying not too as i like the clean look of not having a front mech. new forks should be here tuesday and if im free next weekend i will head over o tlangdon to see how i get on with a 1x9 setup first. next step is carbon bars

Single ring would also be fine for Ickworth too as there was only one real hill last time.

Camalbak gets you too hot, you need to keep as cool as you can, heat needs to get out, and camalbak stops this.

why carbon bars kev? a good set of scandium ones will be lighter?

Ah I don't sweat much, especially on my back. Tried it on the Nuclear Blast and it was fine. I suppose it's a case of where you want to have the extra weight as well.

Ian, ive not even looked at scandium bars before so now off to investigate further. as soon as ive got it up and running i will be up for an xc ride

new forks arrived today and just been fitted


the original reason for buying this frame was to have somewhere to put all the parts that i had removed from the trance, that reason is now no more as the only trance parts that remain are stem,bars and brakes, all to be replaced shortly

Rear mech, 10 speed cassette, shifter,cables,chain ect ordered. will be out this weekend providing i dont have to work. gears are going to be 36t front 11-34 10 speed rear. ill just have to spin my legs faster on the flat bits thats another early xmas present to my self done.
