Been having issues with my back since a motorcycle accident 3 years ago which has been getting progressively worse since and yesterday went to get my latest results back from my orthopedic doctor. To cut a long story short, he's told me to give up biking, as it's putting pressure on my spine every time I ride especially DH & landing jumps etc. and I risk serious problems in the future if I carry on. Physiotherapy and strengthening my back muscles at the gym will help but there's no permanent treatment.

I thought about ignoring his advice, as can't imagine not getting out on the bike but a stern talking to from the missus changed my mind and as always she's right. Needless to say I'm gutted!

This isn't goodbye, as I've made some good mates from this forum and will still be getting out and about to catch up, just won't be riding.

I will be putting my DH bike and some other bits up for sale shortly so keep an eye out.

Hi ,
Bad story, must be everybodies nightmare.
Have you a mech. skill with bikes or a teacher of skills.
I.E still able to play around with bikes. (Pass on your knowledge) Make a descent cuppa.
Dont think I could watch others doing something I want to do.

Best of luck -keep us all in contact.
By for now.
Bob

Dam that sucks so much sorry to hear it. Is all riding out of the question even some xc or road? I cant imagine not being able to ride I even miss cycling to work on the single speed. Could end up being a plus maybe time to pick up a camera and start filming and shooting if you dont already.

Sorry to hear that, must be really depressing. I'm going to see a specialist about a possible trapped nerve in my neck, so can sympathise. Good luck, I am sure there are other ways to keep your interest in,

Thanks all, yeah it is depressing, especially as I've only just got my DH bike. Asked about XC riding and he reckons that will be just as bad for me, thats one of the reasons I got rid of my XC bike and my back was killing me after getting in from longer rides. Thought DH would be better, didin't even occur to me about my back taking a pounding from the terrain and landing jumps etc.

Just pm'd ya mate.
If this is recent news, dont make a snap decision on selling the bike, chuck a blanket over it.
And get a 2nd opinion from a doc who specialise in extreme sports.

from a quick search, recumbent bikes are the way to go ;)

there will be a solution, dont give up yet

Fucking hell and apparently there is a god!!!
mate as chris says get 2nd opinion take stock and take time to think about your options never give up until got all the opinions / options from all angles there are many bods specialising in sports injuries , you will be surprised how many sports people have the same problem and with right equipment / support they can carry on!
chin up and look at the options before making snap decision.

Mate this is my 3rd opinion, this time from a private consultant in london. he said the same as the 2 other NHS doctors ive seen. all 3 cant be wrong and im not risking screwing my back up any more and not being able to do things, especially with the kids.
decision has been made, im gutted but its not the end of the world.
