Hi,

I have a couple questions about my rear break, it hasn't been right since I brought the bike it doesn't seem to have any bite. Even if you gab a hand full it won't lock the wheel.

I took it into a shop and got it bled but that hasn't helped, so the next stop is new pads I know its a hope calliper but not sure which, could anyone tell me which I need (See pics below)

Also I got a spare 185mm disc with the bike which I was thinking of sticking on the back just for the sake of having matching front and back discs (again see pics below). I know I can get and adapter for the calliper but the disc mounts on the hub is different, Can I also get an adapter for this or are the mounts hub specific.

I got wd40 on brake pads once and that had this effect on it new pads was the only fix for me ..

Regarding the disks, the one you have on the hub may be a shimano centrelock one, if you could take a photo of that side of the wheel out of the frame we could tell.
If a pad change does bring the power back then you could have a sticking caliper piston, dodgy seals or the shop that did the last bleed didn't do it properly.

I read the title and thought someone had broken their back..ouch..but no..its about brakes..phew !

Theres a bike shop that told the tale of a girl who sprayed wd40 on the discs coz they had rust on them, then took the bike into the shop coz it 'wasnt stopping properally'.

Ive had contaminated pads on a few occasions and generally you have to buy new ones, although on one occasion giving them some serious use (on long DH road route from Les Linderats to Morzine) got rid of the crap.

Ive also used Carborundum on occasion this is a gritty sand like substance I used in my previous job working with optics, a small bit grinds away the surface and hopefully gets rid of crap, I once read about Steve Peat doing something similar, he a had tub of magic gritty northern mud he chucked on discs.

as per the others if its been bled then i would change the pads.
do you have the same brake on the front?

could you swap the pads from the front to the rear and see if the bite comes back ?

if it does at least then you can eliminate the rest of the system

I think I'll grab some new pads it can't hurt. Are all hope pads the same or are they model specific ?

I suspect Hope pads vary, try Superstar they have lots of cheap pads, what type are you using ?

First make sure the pads are indeed advancing far enough to make contact with the rotor. They should make contact within about 10-15mm lever travel.

If they are making contact then it could well be contamination, which can be a pain - if it is contamination then both the pads and rotor will be contaminated. You need to replace them both at same time, otherwise the contaminated component will contaminate the new one and this can carry on for ages.

I can't make out the model reference on the brake.

I guess I should pop em out and take a look, first time I have done a pad change so not sure what's in there at the moment

Are you 100% its the pads then?

Na I'm not a 100% but I thought new pads wouldn't hurt even if it didn't fix it
