Thanks for the ebay link. this is the first bike that ive owned where the hanger isnt part of the dropout. Why would the hanger be separate? It dosnt need to be , does it?

Its there to be a weak point, so your mech doesnt break

Well mine was certainly weak, it just fell apart in my hands whilst cleaning it. Ok now this may seem a silly question , are they frame specific or mech specific as there's loads of different shapes. Im guessing frame.

Frame specific, all mech's are the same thread going into the hanger.
they are usually identified by a letter, look at the old one, it should be stamped on it somewhere.

Exactly...

I learned from others' experience and I always carry a spare hanger. I remember the 1st time if happened to me out on the trails...
Was taking a turn on a mate's new bike so he was on mine. About 2 minutes later, I hear a snap, etc. from behind me and look around and my mate's standing looking at the rear mech of my bike. He starts apologising and I calmly say it ok, give me a minute..
Upturn the bike, produce a hanger from my pack, swap it over ..... and jobs a goodun' :)
Needless to say, the others in the group all ordered spare hangers for their bikes after that ride ;)

Ok so id better invest in a spare then. I, ll get one off ebay (thanks vw-surfbum) tho the one I bought locally is good quality as its machined rather than forged. I still thought it was a lot of money tho. Thanks.
