Pulling my hair out with this one, on my current bike i bought a deore 2010 groupset and its been great, cant fault it but late last year i decided i wanted double & bash but never bought the chainrings to convert, for my new build i have the choice of swapping over the deore crankset, buying something new or buying two chainrings for the deore and swapping

i have no idea what the right solution is, sounds daft i know, its giving me a headache ! if i buy new do i go deore, slx, saint, xt, xtr ? are there any good deals about that i've not seen, is Merlin the only place that does the groupset buys?

any other brands worth looking at ?

it has to be 10spd is all i know, the dyna-sys stuff works excellent

So you plan to go single speed front and 10 out the back?

i would look at zee perhaps as that will be good value.

either way go short rear cage if you are only running one front or medium if you run two

Double up front in an ideal world, with 10 out back as thats what i have already

That crankset is smart but you can buy saint for that money off amazon!

a long rear mech is gonna do you more harm than good mate

i have a medium on my demo and it flaps about like a bitch

whats the reasoning behind a double with a 10 out the back ? i thought the 10 was to negate the second ring?

I'll be using it as my only bike so need plenty of gears to munch the miles, you need a long cage for large assortment of rings upfront, the less teeth/rings you have the shorter the rear cage can be

I'd go for same set up as me :0.

Zee Derailuer (£60 - CRC) and shifter (£30 - CRC), feels lovely, very smoove and youve got the shadow plus clutch . Single up front (Ive got 32T) and ten speed at back (mines HG something 11-36), that really gives me all the gears I need and does away with the hassle/expense of 2x up front. I havnt worked it out but I think that 32T by 11-36T gives a range as big as some 2x front setups.

Ive got Saint cranks, they are a bit of a rip off new, but plenty of cheap second hand ones online, (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SHIMANO-SAINT ... 257bfeac3f) and give em a rub down, spray em black and then colour code with Saint decals from Slik Graphics > http://www.slikgraphics.com/collections ... s-m810-815.

I find my 1st/2nd gears get my up most hills, even I cant get up its not the fault of the gearing its me being unfit, I chuck it in 4th/5th for a DH run and doubt whether I'd ever use 9th/10th.

Good idea's there but i reckon i'll need the 2x10 up front for longer rides and smoother range, i'm tempted by this groupset:

but there are some issue with it:
the cranks are 175mm, i really need 170 or 165
The rear mech doesn't have a clutch

bonus that new brakes are included which means my old bike remains almost whole bar seat and post therefore i can try and encourage emily to ride it or its more sale-able ?

Have you asked stanleybridge if they can price match and give you the specific stuff you want?

Too late, there are TWO things wrong with me.....

I have no patients for new things
i have access to the internet 24x7

i will however have a couple of brand new unused parts for sale in the near future (Front derailleur, rear derailleur, front outer chain ring) details to follow when they arrive and i've replaced them with the 2x10 stuff.

i have now basically ordered a whole new bike bar seat and seatpost my missus is going to kick my arse !
