So..I've finally decided that my lovely Commencal DH bike is perhaps a bit OTT, mainly coz of its bloody weight, I loved it for 2 weeks in Morzine but dragging it around London was not fun and realitically most of my riding is not down steep mountains.

I'm looking at a Commencal Supreme FR or Meta SX which are a bit more hybrid Enduro/XC/DH, anyway it has a tapered headtube, does this mean that only tapered forks will fit ?, or can you use 'standard' 1.25" forks and some special headset (i.e 1.25" at top and some 1.5" variation at bottom) ?

You can use std forks with either a reducer headset or a collar on the the steerer tube.

A tapered frame comes with 1 1/8" top and 1 1/2" bottom. They can run 1 1/8" top and 1 1/2" bottom (tapered) fork or 1 1/8" top and 1 1/8" bottom (standard) fork with the correct headset. As a general rule, non tapered forks are cheaper. You can also get frames (and forks) that are 1 1/2" both ends allowing any configurations (and angle set) headsets.

I've got the meta am and love it, if I did less xc or had two bikes I would of defiantly of gone for the sx version with fox 36 forks

Aha..thanks for that. The main issue is that when searching for (2nd hand) forks the options are somewhat limited if looking for tapered. I just nearly bought a complete bike Supreme Fr and coloured coded Marzocchi forks for £1600 from CRC but it wouldnt let me pay on the bonkers CRC site, just ended up showing me the infamous bed picture ! :)

Its not clear now if its in stock or sold out or was never there in first place.

I had a deep conversation with my man in the bike shop. Have just bought a Stanton Slackline with a 44m head set tube, what ever they are called... He was adamant it wouldnt take a tapered fork. I argued and he admitted he was a silly billy. I don't know a lot about it all tbh but this subject is also topical in my life.

Mine has tapered forks and I had to source a headset to accommodate them in the straight headtube, once I got my head around it it was simple enough

Have a look on the cane creek web site to see all the different headset formats, the other thing that you will have to have a look at is if its internal or external bearing cups (adds to even more confusion  )
