Discounted? No sh*t! €800 and you dont even get a shock with it.

I agree with VW - weight is priority so my vote goes to Isla MTB 24 but they are pricey. Ebay may have something for £300 but these bikes do hold value well.

A decent alternative is also Orbea MX 24 Team in black - http://www.orbea.com/gb-en/bicycles/mx-24-team/ Very light at 10kg, 1x10 speed (11-36), and thumb shifter, trade off with the brakes though. I was very close to buying one 15mths ago, Cycle Surgery had 25% off but there was a 2mth wait.

As most kids bikes sub £300 come with rubbish parts, I could suggest that you buy a used 24" bike and upgrade few bits. Thats what I eventually did with my sons current Pinnacle Twentyfour early last year. Found one on Ebay for £60 in good nic. With another £120 or so I upgraded:

- new 24" air fork Spinner Grind 24 @ £65 - still have the details if needed.
- new shimano thumb shifters 3x7 @ £20
- new stem & wider fat bar @ £15 (80% off from Wiggle)
- new lock-on grips @ £5
- new MTB tyres @ £20

It now looks like this below. I hope I have not complicated it for you but you will find out he will grow out of it pretty soon.

Dude cut that steerer down and remove the million spacers!
Looking really good though.

The bars are cut to 580 (or 600) max but look wider on the pics. I thought the same when looking at it. The spacers do look odd, initially most were above the stem as i did not want the steerer tube cut too short. He found it too low so i chose the easy/cheaper option. Is that wrong? Did not want to spend on new riser bars or new stem. Hence the Piglet.

Bars are fine, i was talking about the fork steerer tube.
Personal preference, its him riding it, but i would say it wouldnt be its strongest putting the stem that far up.
The saddle should be horizontal so when the weight is on the forks it tips ever so slightly down, thats why hes feeling its more comftable with the bars that high.

How tall is he - can't you make the leap to a 26" bike - 24" options are soooooo limiting!

He's not my son, its a friend who doesn't have much, if any, online access during the day, the current decision is just that though. put him on a tiny 26" and then the decent components can follow him as he grows up in frame sizes

I got a extra small 26" Kona Fire Mountain for my son (who is short anyway).

Cost me £150 on eBay and then since then (xmas) I've upgraded it a little (well everything actually...),

But the idea was exactly the same - get a small frame that he's happy with and then let it all grow with him.
