Nice, unless its freezing cold I don't mind the rain. Back from 10 days away, eating drinkling, the worse possible preparation for the race. Thats what I worry about.

See you guys there. Look out for a Whyte 29er in white, possibly a all red rain jacket (subject to weather), white helmet and say hello. Cant be many.

There is a good chance you find me following the bacon trail.

How everyone did on Saturday? It was pretty difficult and good fun will all that mud especially on the first downhill section.
Managed 2h47min on the Standard. Filmed most of the course and will upload the video later on.

Yeah my legs found that pretty tough going on the epic route, slow... with a chain break and a puncture. Plenty of biscuits & food on offer to keep you going though!
Good to see a few of you there. Top effort on the CX bike Chris. Might even do the South Downs one, 22 Jun
Bring on the video :D

Great fun, well organised, and those Feed Stations were godsend. Shoulders and arms aching too, it shows how tense it was controlling the bike on those muddy descents. As peterfb said above, that first descent was so muddy some riders decided to walk it. I went down fast-ish but slided sideways twice withing 50yds. It was like ice skating. Those riders were walking down side by side did not help either. Needed to hoot, almost.

I think the mud was too much for most bikes. I saw many broken down, puncture or chain hard to tell but my front derailleur was also bent and moved from its seattube place. Stuck on the granny ring and the higher 5 gears for the last 5 miles. Thankfully, it was not long before the last long climb (yeah, another one) so no gears were required, I walked the bloody thing...and still struggling to get any grip on my flat shoes.

The best bit was a long descent on a rocky path. loose rocks and roots, it was mental going fast. I thought if I fall here would definitely require a face transplant.

The worse bit was THAT long climb just after Shere village (mile 18 I think) starting next to a car park and going on forever. I remember a Wiggle sign half way up 'Pain is temporary, the glory lasts forever'. I wished i had a marker pen and cross out 'the glory' with 'this hill'.

Overall it was great, never done anything as challenging as the Epic in my short MTB life but would do it again tomorrow........with mud tyres on stand by (lesson learned).

Dill, Simon & your friend, good to see you guys. Devil MTB next on May 17th. Hopefully the weather will be better.
