Been thinking about possibly going down the custom wheelset route, but I'm having a tough time finding the right hubs for the build and its killing the idea before its even started.

What I would like to find in a little hidden corner of the internet would be some 32 hole straight pull hubs with 15mm front and 12/142mm rear axles.

Below would be nice, but not deal breakers:

Black is good, red would be better.

A quieter freehub


I have seen pictures of a straight pull Hope, but it is nowhere to be found to buy. Also seen a 32h DT Swiss 240, but only see the 28h listed on their own site. Again Industry 9 and a few other companies have straight pull hubs but their websites make it look like they are only available as part of there wheelsets.

Am I missing something or is the internet actually failing me this time? If you happen have seen something I have missed please do let me know below, the more links the better!

Very odd, CRC dont list one hub that is straight pull for mountain bikes?

I have sun ringle straight pull for my spares and had Crank bothers and mavic all straight pull in the past? maybe its not the done thing anymore?

Novatec will probably make what you want..!! ( don't quote me though as I've not checked..lol )

I don't see why you would want a straight pull hub when a conventional hub would give you far more choices and is cheaper to build,
conventional J bend spokes are cheaper to buy and much more readily available than straight pull..!!

There are so many hubs on the market to choose from what sort of build are you looking for...
Wheel size ,type of riding ,bike type ,super strong ,super light...!!

And lastly as "surfbum" says what's your budget..£££.?? This is the one key area that will decide your final build.!!
Also if you build them yourself that will save you money again..

I would whole heartedly recommend Novatec hubs but they dont do straight pull, also superstar switch (made by novatec)

Not really set myself a budget and in no massive rush, going to build up the bits what I want over time to get the right wheels.

I want straight pull as it seems like progress to my eyes compared to a coventional hub, plus they do look a bit cooler and weight wise they seem to come up lighter when comparing hubs like for like. My hardtail has them too....it would be nice to match

So far my imaginary build consists of some derby 27.5 by 40mm carbon rims and Sapim CX ray spokes with red nipples ideally mated to some form of straight pull hub, have seen a DT Swiss build come out with the same spokes at about 1560g with valves and tape.

Found these earlier, but they are pretty steep on the price and not overly keen on the design. The do have red and 32h and seem extremely light maybe too light even?

FYI the wheels are intended for my Full suspension GT Sensor Carbon. I am open to modification from this wheel spec with good justification, so chime in if you think I got something wrong. it just where I'm at right now.

Or i could just buy some Easton Havens, although at 19mm wide, I think I will be doing myself a disservice. Epecially as it already has 23mm wide rims on it that it came with.

They are nice but at 23mm they are no change to my current wheels width and complete wheels still come with conventional hubs. I have also heard bad things about the company not honoring any kind of crash replacement. In my time spent on the derby rim thread over on mtbr its surprising how many people are coming from those rims after having a bad experience with their customer service after an accident. Fingers crossed that yours hold up OK.

I must have spent the best part of every evening looking for a week now. It may be my background but I can easily source rare Japanse parts for cars from translated websites with less effort, but I guess a 32 hole straight pull is beyond me!

So Hubs any hubs convention or not as long as they are 32 hole. Still stuck on DT Swiss or Chris King maybe? Any first hand recommendations?

I must say mine have been fantastic, much stiffer than my ally wheels and the novatec hubs roll better than any wheels I've had before.

Chris king = overpriced..!! Special tools needed to service..!!

I would just go with a conventional hub as you can get lighter stronger stiffer cheaper etc etc

The Internet and forums are not always the best place to do research..!!

I know a wheel builder who has been building wheels for 40+ years and they would not touch or recommend straight pull hubs, I know that's only there opinion but it must mean something.?

Novatec make hubs for so many companies its not even funny..
You have to remember in today's world Taiwan leads the way in bike parts.

I understand you wanting what you want, i would do the same and have done..
But I just think you would get a better wheelset if you went to conventional hubs..

Just my own opinion..

Also on a side note have you seen the price of straight pull CX Ray spokes..!!!!



They are total overkill on your average mtb and are just not needed..!!
