 Post subject: Suspension adjustment. Is it necessary?

Hi all,

I have a Trek Fuel EX7 29er which I am enjoying using.
however, the Fox shocks don't feel 'smooth' enough and I'm wondering how you use the adjuster knob on the left front fork.
Apparently you can add or remove air to make them harder/softer.
I rarely do anything strenuous at the moment so just want to make them much smoother than they are in terms of them going up and down their movement range. They are 120mm travel.

any tips?
do they need any maintenance such as lubing them anywhere?

Also, with the rear, any suggestions on making that a bit harder as it feels almost too soft currently.

It makes such a difference getting your suspension set up for you.

Take 5 minutes out to either visit your LBS or a mate in the know and set your "sag" etc. Really need 2 people to do it properly.

No. take it they are different to the normal Schrader tyre pumps?

is that literally it? you just pump it up or deflate to suit?

You need a shock pump as it has a two valve system so you don't let any air out when removing the hose. A normal tyre pump wont do

Suspension setting can be a bit of a black art, but can make a huge difference, I really fiddled with the settings on my Fox van RC2 in the Alps, mainly to save my hands which had already developed blisters, it eventually ended up on all the softest compression settings, although if I was doing huge jumps/drops then this may of caused difficulties.

Its quite easy to set the initial sag and get the rebounmd right, i.e not too much bounce or feeling sluggish.

Things like compressions low/high sped can be more tricky, but with the perfect settings you should be floating over roots, rocks, able to land big jumps without bottoming out or being bucked off, etc

There are quite a few online guides/videos about this.

Suspension damping is a specialist thing.

but adding/removing air is user stuff.

bass there is some lube you can put on after washing/ before ride
